A succession of rulers from the same family or group. China's history is organized around dynastic cycles: Xia, Shang, Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing. Each dynasty shaped Chinese culture, governance, and territorial extent. The Qin Dynasty first unified China in 221 BCE; the Han Dynasty established Confucianism as state ideology; the Tang Dynasty is considered China's cultural golden age.
